Almost 200 out of work as meatworks shuts down

28 Oct, 2009 02:38 PM
The shutdown of the Wallangarra meatworks with only 24 hours notice to workers has outraged many in the border town and beyond, but Country Fresh director Graham Jackson said it would have been irresponsible to continue operations.

Rumours that last Friday’s closure of the Wallangarra plant now enables the company to expand its Tamworth operation to two shifts a day have been refuted by Mr Jackson, who said the plants have two very different operations.

“The Wallangarra plant is a bone-out mutton operation, whereas Tamworth is bone-in lamb,” he said.

“Wallangarra was always set up as a mutton plant for Queensland sheep suppliers, but the drought, live exports, the exodus from sheep farming to cattle farming, the strong dollar and the wool market are all conspiring against us.”

Mr Jackson said the Wallangarra closure is due to a desperate shortage of export sheep. What is available costs far too much to be economically viable, and the plant would remain closed until such time as trading conditions become sustainable.

Mr Jackson could not set a date on when the plant will reopen, and said predictions that the closure could be for three to eights months were speculation.

“It would have been reckless to keep going, given the amount of money we were losing,” he said.

Nevertheless the short notice has infuriated the workers and their families, with some saying they would have had time to seek other employment if they knew in advance the plant was closing.

Mr Jackson said the managers had been in talks all week, right up until Thursday afternoon, considering alternatives to the closure but none were seen as viable. One option was to increase the number of goats processed at the plant. Goats already occupied the production two days per week, supplementing the sheep operation, but Mr Jackson said the goat-trading situation is also horrible.

He said the repercussions for the community are unfortunate, with the majority of the 190 laid-off workers coming from Wallangarra, Tenterfield and Stanthorpe. Some will have the option of relocating to the Tamworth plant.

“It depends on whether they can make the move,” Mr Jackson said.

“It’s OK for the younger ones, but it’s more difficult for a family to relocate.

“Those that have holidays owing can use them up, but then they might have to fall back on government benefits. It’s lucky we live in a first-world country.”

Mr Jackson said the company had observed all award requirements.

The mood amongst the workers is dour, although none wished to go on record with their grievances. The disgruntled wife of a worker said she was disgusted that Country Fresh would treat its workforce so dismissively in the chase for the almighty dollar.

“And it’s the follow-on effects too,” she said.

“There’s more pressure on tax payers with unemployment benefits to be paid to those that don’t have anything behind them. Those that do get work at meatworks in other towns have the travel costs, and then their families are isolated as many only come home at weekends.

“They’ve only been back eight weeks since the last shutdown and they (Country Fresh) lost a lot of workers then, so workers might be hard to find next year.”

The much-anticipated cattle processing line, which arrived last July, is still to be installed. Mr Jackson said the new line is still on the drawing board, and it could be nine to 12 months before it is operational.

The live trade destroyed this slaughterhouse as well. Live export is like the bubonic plague- kills everything it touches

Why are they not recieving redundancy as they have been told no work for 8 months. How do they expect people to just sit and wait for that long to be reinstated. Shame on the owners playing with people's lives like this. Where is the union and why have they not stood behind their members.

I am sorry that these people lost their jobs but I am happy to see a slaughhter-house close down. The fear and the suffering that the animals go through in these places is why I say this , I hope that the workers find other jobs in other industries where they will be happy
