'Big Joe's' weight revealed

23 Feb, 2012 01:26 PM
HE has travelled from Stanthorpe to Glen Innes and from Tenterfield to Guyra tempting visitors and locals alike to take a punt.

Hundreds have taken up the challenge to guess his weight and now the time has arrived for the all-important question to be answered.

Exactly how much does Big Joe weigh?

The answer? - 1180kg.

Of those hundreds who threw their hat in the ring only three people guessed the weight correctly.

Fiona Donnelly from Tenterfield was one, James Taylor of Dorrigo was another and Jay Kempton from Pinkett was the third.

Linda Martin from Tenterfield and Sandy Morgan from Guyra who are the shared owners of Joe and said the final number was a big surprise.

“We’ve had stock and station agents from all over have a guess. They all thought they had the answers but they didn’t come close,” she laughed.

“We couldn’t believe it…. that is the weight of a small car,”

Since the very beginning four-and-a-half-year-old Joe has been unique, growing to such a size on only on a diet of grass.

Linda Martin said they never expected him to get as big as he has.

Tenterfield stock and station agent, Steve Alford who had the important job of weighing Joe said he has never seen a bullock has big.

A handful of committed locals have had a hand in Joe’s success including farmer Derek Rolf who has donated cattle truck to the cause.

A six-foot bullock who weighs 1180kg takes up at least three bays on any small truck and cannot be transport in a standard vehicle.

Mrs Martin said without Mr Rolf’s support the ‘Big Joe’ campaign would not have been as successful.

As exciting a spectacle as Joe is, he has not just been travelling around for the fun of it but has been part of a campaign to raise money for cancer research.

Both Linda and Sandy have had their lives touched by the disease and Lind said a total over $1,800 was raised at the shows in Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Glen Innes and Guyra.

She said Joe is a very quiet natured bullock who has been a fantastic asset to the local communities.

Now that the secret is out Mrs Martin said Joe will be taken back to his home in Guyra for a short rest before going on the road again at Casino’s Beef Week and the Royal Queensland Show, the Ekka in Brisbane.

A close eye will still be kept on Joe during the downtime with the owners confident he will grow bigger still.
