Tenterfield's deetswood wines has been awarded a gold medal for its 2008 Semillon at the New England Wine Show held in Glen Innes during the weekend.
Deetswood wines was also awarded bronze medals for its 2006 Sparkling Shiraz, 2007 Platypus Port and 2008 Unwooded Chardonnay.
"The judges were very impressed with the quality of the two gold medal winning Semillons even suggesting they are on par with some of the best Hunter Valley Semillons," said Deanne Eaton of deetswood wines.
"The judges who have been coming to New England said the overall standard of New England wine has increased substantially over the years."
Only nine gold medals were awarded to wines at the show across 28 categories. To be eligible for the New England Wine Show, wines had to be made of grapes grown in the New England area and must be available for purchase through a licensed outlet.
Almost 200 entries were submitted from the New England, Granite Belt and Northern Slopes areas.
"[The results are] another fantastic achievement for deetswood wines and shows industry recognition for the Tenterfield area being a great wine producing area," Mrs Eaton said.
Mrs Eaton said Tenterfield's climate and soil made it a good area to grow grapes for wine.
"The reasonably hot days in the summer growing period and crisp cool nights help to develop the flavour profile of the grapes, and this makes it a very nice grape growing area."
Other vineyards in the area to receive awards at the show were Kurrajong Downs, Richfield, Splitters Swamp and Wellington Vale.
