UPDATE:
Emergency services have retrieved the body of a man from a national park in the state's north west overnight.
The man's body was retrieved from the Bald Rock area last night by specialist SES officers from NSW and Queensland and ambulance paramedics.
Due to strong winds, helicopters were unable to be used in the retrieval operation.
While the man hasn't been formally identified, police have found documents supporting the man's identity. Continuing efforts are underway to ensure all relevant family members have been informed.
A post mortem examination will officially determine how the man died. As with all sudden and unexplained deaths, a report on the circumstances leading up to his death is being prepared for the Coroner.
A German bushwalker who went missing at Bald Rock on Monday afternoon was found dead just before midday yesterday.
The 24-year-old, who has not yet been identified, was with three other bushwalkers on top of Bald Rock when he was last seen at 3.30pm on Monday. The man separated from the group and when he did not return they began a search.
Unsuccessful, the group returned to the base of Bald Rock and contacted emergency services who then searched for the man until 9pm that night, when bad light forced an end to the day’s efforts.
New England Area Command police coordinating the search said they were concerned for the man because he was last seen wearing only shorts and a t-shirt and they believed he was not carrying a backpack or any provisions.
A large-scale search party looked for the man yesterday morning and included State Emergency Service units from Glen Innes, Deepwater and Tenterfield, police from the New England Local Area Command, National Parks and Wildlife, Tenterfield Ambulance Service, the Police Air Wing and the Westpac Rescue Lifesaver Helicopter.
At the time of writing, police had established a crime scene and rescuers were attempting to retrieve the body.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
An SES volunteer was hurt while conducting a ground search at Bald Rock yesterday morning, but tests cleared him of any serious injury.
