Des and Marg Kelly have hung up their postman’s bag after travelling more than 500,000 kilometres in five different trucks over the past 21 years delivering from the Rocky River to Mt Mackenzie.
The couple has worked four days a week for the past 21 years and tussled with rain-damaged roads, wasps’ nests and death adders in their service to homeowners on the Scrub Road, Mt Mackenzie, Steinbrook and Rocky River routes.
They completed their last run on Tuesday last week before handing the task over to their nephew who will continue what is a 100-year history for Mrs Kelly’s family in delivering the mail.
The couple said they were sad to have lost the routes, but admitted that they had began to find it more demanding in recent years than they had in the past.
The former dairy farmers will now have more time to focus on the family farm when they return to their cattle, this time as beef producers.
