Legume blaze doused

13 Nov, 2009 02:21 PM
FIREFIGHTERS worked for days to contain a blaze burning near Legume last week.

Superintendent Chris Wallbridge from the Rural Fire Service said the fire had been burning in inaccessible terrain since Monday of last week and had burnt out at least 1300 hectares of grass and bushland.

Fortunately the blaze did not encroach too closely on homes.

“We spoke to property owners on River Tree Road,” Mr Wallbridge said. “The fire was still a good kilometre and a half away.

“It’s very difficult country to work in.”

Mr Wallbridge said the wind had been blowing against the blaze, which had helped contain the fire.

“Rain was the obvious solution,” he said.

Fire authorities backburned around the fire for several nights and, together with landholders, monitored the situation over the weekend.

Rain on Saturday and Sunday extinguished the last of the fire before it reached any residences. Authorities are now keeping a watch on the area to ensure the fire does not re-ignite.
