Survivors of the Victorian bush fires will begin to see the results of a mammoth weekend of quilting held at Tenterfield TAFE in March this year.
Two days and many helping hands from the Adult and Community Education quilting group stitched, seemed and sewed 63 quilts that will go towards those affected in the Victorian bushfires that devastated state and consumed the nation earlier this year.
The Rotary Club of Yea will distribute the quilts to those who most need it in the communities of Kinglake and Marysville, two of the hardest hit areas in the fire zone.
Community College Co-ordinator Jan Cross said it was good to know the quilts were finally getting to their destination after months of organisation and searching for transport. The Warwick based Wickham’s Transport was able to find room in one of their interstate shipping to transport the quilts free of charge.
“The Rotary President at Yea told me that things were so desperate down there at the moment that the Smith Family was purchasing blankets for distribution,” Mrs Cross said.
When the weekend began, the members hoped they would be able to make 40 quilts. Mrs Cross said everyone involved was ‘over the moon’ to have made 63 in total.
