Transgrid promises to meet one on one, face to face

21 May, 2009 10:58 AM
Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay has received an assurance from Transgrid that one on one meetings will be offered to landholders affected by the proposed new transmission line.

“It means there is some flexibility in the process and landholders can expect their views to be carefully considered before any final decision is made,” he said.

“I am opposed to compulsory acquisition in these circumstances and I believe it should be done by negotiation.”

At present an environmental study is being conducted to select a proposed route for the line between Bonshaw and Tenterfield.

“It is too soon to be specific about where the line will go,” Mr Torbay said.

“But landholders are concerned about the affect it might have on their property values, visual pollution, possible health risks and compensation and want face to face meetings to discuss their particular issues and have them resolved.”

The MP raised community concerns about the project at a meeting with Transgrid senior officers in Parliament House last week.

“I was assured there are proper processes in place for compensation along with a guarantee that these would not be below market value,” Mr Torbay said.

“I was also informed that the company designs and locates its facilities on the basis of the latest health and safety information and is willing to discuss these and any other health concerns raised by the community.

“All issues landholders and members of the community might have regarding the project can be raised by calling the toll free number 1800 857 300 throughout the study process.”

Mr Torbay said Transgrid had committed to holding one on one meetings with landholders who request it, on their properties, once the preliminary study had been completed.

“It means that people can raise concerns throughout the study process and afterwards,” he said.

The MP said he would continue to take community issues regarding the project directly to Transgrid and keep the Minister informed throughout the process. Maps are on display and feedback forms are available at the Tenterfield Council offices.

Mr Torbay said that the website http://www/transgrid.com.au/Curre nt_Projects.htm for the Far North NSW project was regularly updated with the latest information on the project.
