TENTERFIELD Shire Council’s acting general manager Glen Inglis has said there will need to be extensive public consultation before drafting a waste management strategy for the shire.
Ratepayers will need to be asked questions such as how far they are prepared to travel to visit a landfill or waste transfer site before they make a decision whether any need to be closed, or new ones are needed.
Mr Inglis said in his experience, it would take 10 to 15 years for approval of a new landfill site from the time council believed it had located a suitable site.
He said he would advise council they could consider opening a joint landfill site with a neighbouring council to share costs.
There is also likely to be an education campaign to go along with the introduction of recycling, with the possible inclusion of school education.
The timeframe for introduction of recycling and a landfill site to replace Boonoo Boonoo will need to be included in the waste management strategy due by June 30.
