Junior cricket

08 Apr, 2004 02:11 PM
As reported last Thursday the game against Drake Sunday, 28 March, was a pretty fine game, Tenterfield winning on the day, 151 to 76. Jake Adam top scored with 38, followed by Coedie Tandy 18, John Savins and James Halliday each with 12, James n/o, and Earl Gordon 11.

The fielding was energetic, Daniel O'Reilly and Mark Savins constantly on the move, Jordan O'Reilly took a good catch and Michael West's accurate throwing from the side stumped a Drake adversary.

Ben Johnston and Kris Boggs were also kept busy trying to field those stray Drake balls and keep their run rate down. Wicket-keeper Ben Hickey did a marvellous job not letting any balls through.

Pat Skinner bowled some accurate balls. Best bowling result was Coedie, 3/1. Other runs scored: Hickey 4, M. Savins 5, J. O'Reilly 4, West 1, D. O'Reilly 3, Boggs 1, Skinner 7 and Johnston 0.

All in all, a good, fair game and we look forward to our continued connection with Drake next season.

Last Sunday was our last day for Junior Cricket this season.

The many dads and mums in attendance seemed to enjoy the parent/children games more than the children did even though there were quite a few dubious decisions in the junior game - some of the poor old folks being either caught or bowled by their own offspring.

The star of the Kanga game was, without rival, Mr Coombes who, after his magnificent triumph, informed us that he had more runs and took more wickets than anyone else!

I wonder if the children let him win in thanks for the fantastic job he has done, since his arrival in Tenterfield, supervising their game every week. Thanks Daniel.

The games were followed by a barbecue lunch, cooked expertly (in Eastern style) by Mrs West, accompanied by salads prepared by Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Kelly, and then presentation of certificates and trophies.

The children, even the older ones, had a fun day and are looking forward to next season.

There are many people who have helped make another season of junior cricket possible and we thank you all.

To the parents who bring their kids along every week and help with games, coaching, scoring, umpiring, cooking and serving in the canteen on game days.

To Catherine Skinner and Sophie Donnolley who volunteered to do canteen on Saturdays and have turned up every week. Well done girls.

To the Shire Council for the loan of the roller. To the Tenterfield Star and 2 TEN-FM for "spreading the word". And finally a huge thank you to Messrs Allan Pierce and Harold Bailey, from the Bowling Club, for their tireless work in keeping our wonderful turf pitch in such excellent condition, a facility that is unusual to find in a small town such as ours and we are all, parents and children, very grateful to have.

Another season over: Kanga cricketers with their trophies - from back left Joshua Donnolley, Luke Shearston, Daniel Coombes, Tyson Ash, Lily Lonergan, John Reynolds. Middle - Curtis Blaker, Tim Kelly, Andrew Coombes, Thomas Butler, Danny Lonergan and Dominic Pelusi. Front Jayden Ash, Dylan Smith.
