 Tigers still on top

Tigers still on top

25 Jun, 2009 03:21 PM
In round nine of the Border Rugby League, the Tenterfield Tigers hosted the Texas Terriers, a team looking to upset the equal-competition leaders and knock the A grade Tigers off the top of the table.

Coming off the back of a good win against Stanthorpe the week before, the Terriers looked capable of doing the job.

The Tigers started well and were able to put on two converted tries, one each to Murray Johnson and Lucas Dearden before the Terriers posted their first points with an 80-metre, unconverted intercept try to winger Travis Choad.

The Tigers hit back in the 34th minute with a try to young Matt Krahe, who showed some good footwork to score wide and extend the Tigers' lead to 14 points. The Terriers managed to score before the half-time whistle and bring the gap down to eight points.

When play resumed the Terriers scored and converted a quick try to come within two points of the Tigers. Tenterfield responded with two quality converted tries, one to working lock forward Murray Johnson and the tireless Lucas Dearden.

A scrappy try to Texas captain Dave Williams kept the Terriers in the picture, but the relentless attack from Tenterfield enabled them to cross the line twice in the space of three minutes. One unconverted try to Brendan Smith and a six-pointer to prop forward Simon Andrews, sealed the win to Tigers against a tough opposition 40-20.

Lucas Deaden had a great game amassing 20 points with two tries and six from seven off the boot. Simon Andrews again led the way up front, hooker Jake Adam had a great game as did the halves pairing of Brendan Minns and Nathan Barraclough.

Players' player went to Murray Johnson.

After this week's bye, Tenterfield will head to Stanthorpe to play the Gremlins on July 4.
