In last Saturday's Round Three Border Rugby League fixture, Tenterfield played host to the Killarney Cutters in A and Reserve Graded in front of a good crowd in excellent conditions for footy.
The Reserve Grade was able to hang on in a seesawing game to come out eventual winners, 18-16. Players' player for the Tigers went to Shaun Bird with a solid performance in both attack and defence.
The A Grade encounter promised to be an exciting fixture after the Cutters were able to dominate Stanthorpe in their previous outing 58-12.
Killarney were first on the scoreboard after a 12th minute converted try, putting them in front 6-0. The Tigers hit back soon after with a six-pointer of their own after second row Damian Petrie made his successful return to the Tigers' fold. Soon after the kick off, Daniel Puglisi playing on the wing was able to outpace the defence to score a good 60 metre individual try to put the Tigers ahead 10-6.
Damian Petrie, relishing his return, was in again to score an unconverted try making the score 14-6 before the Cutters posted their second converted try to make the halftime score 14-12.
The second half saw the Cutters camped down in the Tiger's half for the first 20 minutes, thanks to an extremely high penalty count against them. Meanwhile the locals didn't receive a single penalty in the second half after only gaining two in the first stanza. The Cutters line kicker would still be nursing a sore right foot.
The Tigers defence was faultless as they repelled a constant barrage of Cutters' attack on their line time after time, only to be penalised when it was the Tigers turn to attack. To their credit, the Tigers stuck to their game and were able work the back up to halfway before a very determined Brendan Minns was able to create some magic and take on the Cutters' defence with a fine display of speed and footwork. He raced through the defence and come up with a try under the sticks which was converted to give the Tigers a very deserved 20-12 win.
Players' player for the Tigers was Simon Andrews, also having his first game back for the Tigers. The win was a great effort defensively considering the staggering penalty count against the local side.
This weekend's fixture is a representative game at Stanthorpe between the Border Bushrangers and Roma. The Tigers have three players selected: captain/coach Geoff Swan, Sean Asquith and Lucas Dearden. Good luck, guys, and play well.
The following weekend the Tigers are away to the Texas Terriers.
