Webbey to help steer Shipton operation

19/08/2008 12:00:01 AM

FORMER Racing NSW chief handicapper Mark Webbey will make a reappearance on the Sydney racing scene next month after a three-year stint handicapping in Singapore.

Webbey is set to take up the role of racing manager for trainer Anne-Marie Ruttley and her husband, Bob, after the trucking magnate-turned-major thoroughbred owner offered him the position.

"The way the ratings-based handicapping has come into Sydney racing, it is becoming harder and harder to place a horse in a race it can win," said Bob Ruttley.

"It is a big task, so what better way to get around it than to import the best back to Sydney to help us along?"

Webbey left Racing NSW in controversial circumstances after the losing support of its hierarchy and after a subsequent three years in Singapore, last weekend returned to his family in Sydney.

Ruttley said Webbey would start at his Shipton Lodge complex at Cobbitty on September 1, taking pressure off Anne-Marie and allowing her to "do what she does best" - which is "concentrate on the horses".

"We have 30 of our own horses in work and there are another 60 pre-trainers at the property," Ruttley said. "By having Mark with us, Anne-Marie can focus on the horses, which are her passion, without having to worry about the administration side of things.

"Mark can deal with all that stuff, booking jockeys, nominating horses. He knows every person there is to know in racing. What better-credentialled person would you want on board with you?"

Meanwhile, jockey Dwayne Dunn has picked up the ride on the Gai Waterhouse-trained group 1-winning mare Tuesday Joy when it runs in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday week.

Nash Rawiller had been booked for the ride but Waterhouse now requires him to stay in Sydney for the Golden Rose meeting the same day after her other stable jockey, Blake Shinn, incurred a two-week suspension at Rosehill at the weekend.

Trainer Lee Freedman's Royal Ascot-winning mare, Miss Andretti, has been nominated for this Saturday's McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley, along with Melbourne Cup winner Efficient.

Golden Slipper runner-up Von Costa De Hero is also nominated for a return to racing at Moonee Valley in the Essendon Nissan Stakes, while Magic Millions-winning filly Augusta Proud is down to run in the Arrow Training Services Plate.

In other news, the Gosford Race Club has appointed James Heddo as is its new CEO.
