LAST week’s editorial and article about poker machine changes stirred up a hornet’s nest.
Senator Nick Xenophon has written below that there will not be a requirement for people to register to play poker machines if club’s choose to dial down the intensity on their machines.
He has accused Clubs Australia of mounting a “misinformation campaign” about the changes.
Other readers let us know that research has shown that the introduction of a mandatory sign up/voluntary precommitment limit setting system leads to a 10 per cent profit reduction, not a 40 per cent reduction.
Some readers were just plain against money being made by facilitating gambling.
It does appear that it is naive to expect people to control their own addictions. It is just too easy to find somewhere to gamble your money.
Whatever your view, we must still look at the impacts on small towns.
It is unusual to hear the managers of our town’s clubs unite to speak out so clearly against anything. While we know profits are at stake, so are the clubs that prop up community sport, community groups and community meeting places.
