Clothier steer takes champion title

A TENTERFIELD steer has taken the honours in the over-the-hook competition at Casino Beef Week.

Helen and Mark Clothier’s Simmental/red angus steer won the overall champion carcass for 2012 after winning the class 2 361-430kg section scoring 90.386 points.

“Credit goes to our sons Samuel, Adam and Matthew,” Mrs Clothier said.

“They have been preparing, showing, judging and parading our own steers for quite a few years, previously winning minor prizes at Casino Beef Week, Tenterfield Beef Bonanza and the Brisbane Ekka.

“Samuel selected this steer which was bred by Lyn and Margaret Davies from ‘Five Springs’, Tenterfield, and the boys have spent a lot of time preparing the steer for the competition.”

Mrs Clothier said the steer missed out on a place in the led steer competition recently in Casino and was bought by Tenterfield butcher Matador Meats, suppliers of Foodworks Tenterfield, owned by Peter and Catherine Hay.

The Clothiers then found out the steer had won the overall competition in the over-the-hook results announced on Tuesday.

Other successful Tenterfield competitors were Glenn and Linda Martin, whose beast was placed third in the lightweight class, and Keith and Annette Willcocks, with a fourth in the heavyweight class.
