“We had quite a good day I suppose,” Tigers Captain and Coach Brendan Minns said modestly.
Going into the game Texas had a number of injury casualties piling up and Mr Minns said the side’s youthful inexperience hampered their chances.
“I think there was a bit of inexperience – they were a very young side.
“They had three or four pull out during the week including their captain,” Mr Minns said.
“They were the walking wounded by the end of it.”
“Our defence set the platform early, not letting the Terriers out of their own half and capitalising on their mistakes. The young Texas side never gave up, fighting right untill the end of the game in true Terrier spirit,” he said.
Try Scorers were, Farron Anderson (5), Jake Kelly (2), Nathan Dearden, Lucas Dearden, Kieren Jones, Bailey Rhodes, Jesse Murphy, Floyd Oxford and Matt Krahe got one each.
Brendan Minns got five goals and Matt Krahe one.
“Yet again the youngsters stood up and played extremely well, with six of the squad being under 18s and playing their first year of senior football.”
Mr Minns said it was early days but Texas and Wallangarra both had question marks hanging over them.
“I don’t want to see it go back to a three team competition,” he said.
With players previously expressing their unwillingness to travel lengthy distances for the Group 19 or Toowoomba competition, Mr Minns said he was hopeful the league would find its feet.
The competition will take a brief hiatus for two weeks with representative football on this weekend in Miles, Queensland.
Jesse Murphy, Ben Watts, Jim Loneragan, Jack Daniels, Farron Anderson, Jake Kelly, Nathan Dearden and Mr Minns have all been selected as part of the Border Bushrangers side for this weekend’s games.
Ben Battistuzzi was selected but has opted to pull out.
“The boys are over the moon to be selected,” Mr Minns said.
It will be a new experience for some with Mr Minns the only player among the group to play representative football in the past.
Following the Easter weekend the Tigers will cross the border to take on arch rivals the Stanthorpe Gremlins who went down 44 – 30 against Killarney on Saturday.
“We’ll play the day after Anzac Day so hopefully I’ll be able to keep the boys out of the pubs,” he said.
In the days other game the Tenterfield Tigers ladies league tag side narrowly lost out to Texas 14 – 10.
