Yesterday, students from Tenterfield High School were on site at the High Street corner en masse to install nearly 2,000 shrubs and groundcovers.
The remainder of the planting will continue from there with council's Parks and Gardens personnel and the Tenterfield Digger's Club.
"It is great to see the enthusiasm for the project now that the tree planting has started and we can start to see what the architect has planned,” Tenterfield Shire mayor Peter Petty said.
"This is the community's asset and it is great to see how involved the community has become. The project has been built by locals, the benches, bins and plants are all locally supplied and we have the school and local clubs involved. I am already stopped by visitors to let me know how much more welcoming our town has become with trees and plants instead of walls. I am really looking forward to seeing the end result,” he said.
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) have begun the resurfacing of the CBD, following delays due to wet weather and Oracles of the Bush.
These works will be undertaken at night and will occur for approximately one week with council advising that there will be some noise and disruption to residents on Rouse Street.
"We have a busy few weeks coming up,” council’s Director of Engineering Services Dennis Gascoigne said.
"We have the trees and plants going in and RMS asphalting, but we also have the ongoing works at the post office with the granite steps arriving at the end of April, the benches, bollards and bins will start to be installed in a couple of weeks, line marking and updated parking signage happens after Easter, and interpretive signage for the corners at Manners St still need to be finished and installed."
It is expected that RMS will line mark the central business district immediately after Easter with the 40kph zone implementation to take place either late April or early May.
ROAD resurfacing is underway in Tenterfield with Roads and Maritime Services re-laying sections of the New England Highway between Miles and Molesworth Streets.
Road resurfacing update:
ROAD resurfacing and line marking is nearing completion with Roads and Maritime Services re-laying sections of the New England Highway between Miles and Molesworth Streets.
Works began last week as RMS resurfaced 520 metres of the highway.
Member for Northern Tablelands said he was encouraged to see works start in Tenterfield after a brief delay.
“This work has been rescheduled from its earlier original dates due to wet weather and to accommodate the Oracles of the Bush Festival,” Mr Marshall said.
Mr Marshall said the RMS was striving to reduce inconvenience to local residents and business operators by doing necessary work at night, or as quickly as possible during daylight hours.
“Weather permitting, night work will be carried out from 6pm until 6am the following day, and day shifts will be from 6am until 6pm,” the MP said.
“Motorists are asked to comply with all temporary signposting and traffic control measures in these locations and to proceed with care through worksites,” he said.
Mr Marshall said the benefits of the works program included “safer and longer lasting pavements for busy sections of the highway”.
