The ladies league tag got the day under way with the two teams sitting at the top of the ladder.

Tenterfield proved their dominance by beating the Terriers ladies 22 – 6.

“They scored some really good tries – they seem to be really coming together as a team,” men’s coach Brendan Minns said.

The win puts a clear gap between the two teams going into the finals.

After representative football and a bye, the men’s side returned to action with a convincing win over their opponents.

The game got off to a poor start for the Tigers with Texas crossing in the opening two minutes.

But that would prove to be the highest point for the home side as Tenterfield broke away to an 18 – 6 lead by half time.

“Our ball handling in the first half really let us down,” Minns said.

“Instead of working into the game slowly the boys just went for it.

“We had a decent chat at half time and that settled them,” he said.

The Tigers improved in the second half and showed some of their best football of the season.

“We dug in and played some really good footy,” Minns said.

The game ended in a 54 – 6 drubbing and sets things up nicely for the local derby with Wallangarra this weekend.

Following their return to the Border League fray after a short-lived ousting, the Rams have seen their on field game improve but their discipline has come under fire.

Tenterfield local and Wallangarra player Kevin Woodbridge was handed a life ban last week after he attacked a referee in their game against Texas on June 28.

Woodbridge king hit referee Peter Morris from behind during their encounter out at Texas.

BRL president Casey O’Connor said it was an “ugly incident”.

“No referee should be put in the position that Peter Morris found himself in.

“The football community condemns the actions of a player who has not only brought shame upon himself and his family but also the BRL,” Mr O’Connor said.

Mr Minns said he expected a fiery game but his team would look to do their talking on the field.

“Apparently there were a few fights in their game against Stanthorpe on the weekend as well – we won’t get involved in that, but we won’t hide in a corner either,” Minns said.

“Hopefully we’ll get out there and put in a good performance.”

Mr Minns said sans himself, they should have a full team at their disposal.

“I’ll probably sit out this weekend and Ben Battistuzzi picked up a niggly injury so we’ll see how that goes.”

The game will be at Wallangarra with the girls starting the action at 1.30pm and the A-grade set to start from 2.30pm.

“We’ve finally got a bit of football – we play Wallangarra then Stanthorpe then Killarney so the boys are pretty excited to get a few games in a row,” Minns said.

With six weeks until finals he said it was important they had some good hit outs leading into the finals series.
