Tenterfield Shire Council will contribute a further $600,000 to the project, making it the largest funding allocation for the roads renewal to date.
Member for Lismore Thomas George said the NSW Government and Tenterfield Shire Council took part in a safety review of Mount Lindesay Road in May this year which informed the specifications of the upcoming upgrades.
“Upgrades will include widening shoulders at narrow sections of the road, new line markings to help better separate lanes of traffic and the removal of vegetation to improve driver visibility of road conditions,” Mr George said.
Work will commence by the end of the year and will focus on sections of the road near Mount Clunie Road, the entrance to Woodenbong and between White Swamp and Gumdale West.
Tenterfield mayor Peter Petty said it was a relief to finally get assistance to patch up the road after years of seeking a lifeline.
“It’s dead set great news – it’s the biggest amount we’ve ever had allocated for that road,” Cr Petty said.
“I thank the Roads Minister Duncan Gay for his support – in meetings we’ve had with him he has been very positive.
“Now we’re in hot pursuit of our Federal Member (Barnaby Joyce) for a further $3 million – they have already said before they would match it,” he said.
NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay said the government was delivering what rural and regional communities and businesses expect and deserve.
“The funding for Tenterfield Shire Council is in addition to the $4 billion committed to rural and regional NSW as part of the overall 2014-15 roads, maritime and freight budget,” Mr Gay said.
