Tenterfield Shire Council’s Manager of Water and Waste Deanne Eaton spent a portion of last week at the Tenterfield Preschool and Tenterfield Childcare Centre speaking with children about the importance of recycling.
Meegan O’Neill from the Preschool said they had implemented programs to highlight the importance for their kids.
“We provide a curriculum that focuses heavily on education for sustainability - not just now but also for future generations,” Ms O’Neill said.
The preschool has begun discussing biodiversity, res-ponsible use of water and energy and growing food.
The children seem on top of the roles of recycling with Lottie saying it was “making old stuff into new stuff”, while Levi singled out some items to recycle by saying “recycling is putting bottles in the bin”.
“Deanne talked to the children about the special yellow bin all our homes recently received and what sorts of materials should be placed in these bins,” Melissa Petrie from the Childcare Centre said.
“All the children also received their very own bag that says ‘don’t waste Tenterfield’.”
A few hiccups in the newly implemented recycling collection service has forced Tenterfield Shire Council to alter their pick up days.
“Recycling collection within the Tenterfield CBD is to be collected on Wednesday mornings,” acting Director of Engineering Services Ralf Stoeckeler said.
