Tenterfield travelled to Warwick on Sunday for three tough encounters with the fourth placed colt’s team taking on second place Warwick.
“It was a really good game – we were up 1-0 at half time but we let up for a short period and they took advantage,” Coach Stan Hickey said.
The Wolves quick counter attacking game rattled the Thunder who couldn’t respond after the home side notched up 4 goals in the second period.
The Thunder ladies went in strong favourites against a struggling Warwick side who were yet to record a win this season.
The game played out as expected and the girls were able to win comfortably 5 goals to nil.
“It gave Glenn (Caisley) an opportunity to play some of the newer players and rest a few of the older ones,” Hickey said.
The men’s side went into their encounter knowing they were in for a tough contest, but Warwick showed why they are favoured to reach this year’s grand final by putting on a master class of attacking football.
“They were on fire – any time we turned over the ball it felt as though they scored,” Hickey said.
Rob and Cameron Davey controlled Warwick’s play from the middle of the park with devastating effect.
Warwick eventually ran away with a 15 – 0 victory, the biggest win in any game this season.
“They were just too quick, skilful and fit – each time they countered they were spot on.
“It was just silly things that led to us giving simple possession away,” Hickey said.
This Saturday the Thunder welcomes Stanthorpe United to Shirley Park with the club currently sit top in both men’s and colt’s grades.
“We’re keen to really compete with the United boys this weekend,” Hickey said.
Stanthorpe coach Steve McEvoy said he would be expecting Tenterfield to bounce back at home.
“The colt’s gave us a real good run in round one so we expect it will be a tougher assignment then our game in round two when they had a few away,” McEvoy said.
“Obviously in the girl’s they are one of the leading teams and it will give us a good test to see where we are at.
“We expect Tenterfield A-grade will be stronger at home – they’re in a rebuilding stage so they shouldn’t focus too much on results and more so on numbers and look to next season,” he said.
Games will get underway from approximately 12.30pm.
