The Gremlins held their Old Boys Day as well as a 40-year-reunion on Saturday, making for a strong and vocal contingent of home supporters.
Despite some anxious moments in the ladies league tag game the Tenterfield girls were able to continue their winning form notching up a 34 – 8 win.
“They played really, really well – the younger girls were a bit nervy but once they got into it they switched on,” coach Wayne Minns said.
“Stanthorpe have improved out of sight but our girl’s attitude towards training and on the field has been great.
“It’s one of the best groups I’ve coached,” Wayne said.
The men’s side went into the clash missing three key players and with a number of others battling injuries.
A poor start had the Tigers on the back foot from the outset with Stanthorpe hitting an early lead.
“We got away to a terrible start – probably the first 15 to 20 minutes we turned over too much possession and didn’t work well enough in defence,” captain/coach Brendan Minns said.
Former Tenterfield players Damian Petrie and Geoff Swan stood out for the Gremlins, controlling much of the play.
“Damian made a lot of metres and the other guys got a lot of confidence from what he was doing,” Minns said.
Both sides had to contest with windy and smoky conditions but Minns said the crowd were hard to combat.
“It was a really good crowd, the best they would have seen all year.
“We hadn’t been in that position before where we were a bit down and out and the spark just wasn’t really there,” he said.
Despite a second half revival the Tigers went down 36 – 18.
“We outplayed and outscored them in the second half but it wasn’t enough.”
With four games remaining, Killarney, a bye and then two back to back against Wallangarra, Minns said it was key they found some winning form going into the finals.
“It’s crucial we stay on top – it’s pretty important that we get that home semi-final.”
They welcome Killarney to Rugby League Park on Saturday with kick off at 2.30pm while the girls have a weekend off.
Minns said he was expecting a robust, physical encounter.
“We need to concentrate and start well – it will be a big clash upfront and if we can match their forwards we should be okay – we need to stay in the winner’s circle,” he said.
