Mr Guise spent Monday in Tenterfield familiarising himself with the town and current issues it is facing.
Changes to the NSW state electoral boundaries mean Tenterfield Shire will be included in the Lismore electorate as of next year.
Lismore based Adam Guise said he had only become involved in the Greens party in recent years following on from his work with the Gasfield Free Campaign.
The initiative has gone to lengths to highlight the Coal Seam Gas issue in the Northern Rivers.
“I’ve never been very political – I only really got involved with the Greens about 2 and a half years ago,” he said.
Mr Guise said the negatives would always outweigh the positives when it came to the CSG argument.
“It has impacts on land and water. It also drives up rent costs in the areas for drive in drive out workers.”
While the Tenterfield shire is yet to be directly impacted by coal seam gas mining he said people needed to remain aware of the effects.
Landcare programs, frontline agricultural services, localising food production and keeping TAFE strong were some of the things he highlighted as focal issues he would look to tackle.
“In communities people want access to certain services and TAFE is essential to that.
“I’m a country Green and I want to support regional communities."
- Adam Guise, Greens candidate for the seat of Lismore
“I’m a country Green and I want to support regional communities,” he said.
With agriculture playing such an important role in each community he maintained it was essential to back farmers.
“70 per cent of the countries land is managed by farmers – we need to support them in tough times.”
Mr Guise said he would travel back to Tenterfield on Friday and hoped to meet with locals and representatives of council to discuss more localised issues.
He stressed Tenterfield had vibrant beef, sheep and wine industries as well as plenty of natural resources to build on.
At this early stage Mr Guise will be looking to contest the seat of Lismore against incumbent member Thomas George and Labor candidate Isaac Smith.
“I think the Nationals have failed to stand up for the community – we need a vision going into the future and I think they’ve failed to be visionaries for our future,” he said.
