“We just wanted to win,” he said.
Win they did, returning a fifth consecutive Jack Frost Carnival victory after comfortably defeating Armidale in the Pool A final round by a 15 point margin.
Though the local team started slow, Ash said they found their groove towards the end of the finals match to secure whitewash wins in all three competition rounds and the coveted final.
“It’s always good to win when you host your own carnival,” Ash said.
The local teams hosted competitors from across the state last weekend as part of the annual carnival, with teams travelling from as far as Dalby, Inverell, Armidale, Glen Innes and Warwick, all of whom were outdone on the day.
Competitions kicked off from 8.30am, with Tenterfield entering two teams in Pool A and Pool B.
Both teams sailed to comfortable victories throughout the competition, but for the Pool B squad, a freak shot from a trailing Glen Innes team saw the local side closely defeated in the final seconds before the buzzer.
“They actually lost with 2.4 seconds on the clock, the other team shot from the other end of the court and the basket went in,” Ash said.
“You’ll probably never see ever again.”
“Lost it right on the buzzer otherwise Tenterfield would have one the A and B Pool.”
The fluke shot caused some commotion on the courts, according to Ash, with a due amount of respect going to the visiting squad.
“From the other end of the court, you’ll never see it happen again, the whole crowd jumped up and they ran around the court. They’d never see anything like it.”
“It was something you dream about, shooting a ball from the other end of the court and it going in.”
With a fifth consecutive victory in the bag, Ash said the teams performed extremely well on the day, with an outstanding team effort bringing home the win.
Reporting no serious injuries and toting home the title, Ash said the side will be looking to bring back the undefeated contenders for next year’s competition to make it six from six in 2015.
