After the would-be thieves struck they burnt out the stolen vehicle and left it on Naas Street last week.
The Toyota Hilux was used to break through the front window of the Spar Supermarket in the early hours of Tuesday morning, September 9.
The vehicle was stolen from local car dealership Hillier Bros Nissan.
Troy Hillier said the incident was very irregular and disappointing to see in the community.
"We've had a car stolen many years ago, but this is the first time of late and the first to be used in a ram-raid," he said.
Emergency services were called to 141 Naas Street at aroudn 4am on Tuesday last week to extinguish the vehicle left burning at the front of a local residence.
Owners of the Spar Supermarket believed the perpetrators were attempting to steal the ATM and reported considerable damage to the shop front.
New England crime manager, Inspector Chris McKinnon, said police investigations are still underway and urged any community members with information to contact Tenterfield Police on 6736 1144 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
