Team Inverell passed through Tenterfield last Thursday on a journey to Nymboida were a congregation of riders were finalising their journey for Down Syndrome NSW.
Thirteen participants on motorbikes from Inverell convened for the annual run which brought together teams from Mudgee, Wauchope, Sydney and Coffs Harbour.
“I’m the only parent on the ride with a daughter who has Down Syndrome,” Brendan Campbell said.
“She’s a really cool 13-year-old fun loving kid – people need to know they can just say g’day and be friendly.”
Brendan has joined other riders to partake in the fifth Scrapheap Adventure Ride.
“This is my first but it won’t be my last,” he said.
This unique event involves motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country purchasing a bike for no more than $1000 and doing it up for the ride.
The initiative was started by Perry Gilson who also has a daughter with Down Syndrome and in just four years the event has raised $220,000.
“Each year we go to a different location – so far this year we have raised around $65,000,” fellow rider Mick O’Brien said.
“The money goes back into running school programs and helping out parents with newborns who have Down Syndrome,” he said.
