Public schooling began in Tenterfield back in 1864 when a premises was built on Rouse Street.
A plaque unveiling initiated the two day celebrations, honouring the original building as well as Tenterfield’s first teacher William Goudy.
Volunteers worked overtime to pay homage to the history of local education and mocked up classrooms at Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Primary School to replicate bygone eras.
A dinner at the Golf Club as well as a Fete on Saturday kept the activities going with plenty to keep everyone entertained.
Sir Henry Parkes Principal Sue Charles said they couldn't be happier with how the occasion was honoured.
“All the feedback we have received has been all positive – it was everything we had hoped for.
“The opportunity on Saturday for the students and their families to enjoy it was great – and it was good to see people from the wider community come along too,” she said.
Ms Charles joked she didn't expect to be around for a 200th anniversary but hoped she would be alive to see the 175th year marked with similar fanfare.
