Tenterfield’s Social Development Committee took the program under their banner in June this year with co-ordinator Jo Yates taking on the reins of the co-operative service.
The venture provides support for families with children experiencing disabilities or additional needs.
“It’s been going pretty good –it’s all new and exciting,” Ms Yates said.
The program is a continuation of others that have over the years fallen by the wayside for varying reasons.
“We’ve take over it under TSDC – all the resources were already here and it links well with some of our other programs.”
Brighter Access has diversified from providing respite services to now providing life skills access and children’s services.
Jo said her portfolio often encompasses clients with speech impairments, dyslexia, transitioning through school and difficulties with social interaction.
“We try and help parents who can be unsure of the next step – we have people come to us with differing circumstances.
“It’s important we reach out to families – it could be a mum who is worried that her child isn’t speaking or having problems interacting,” Jo said.
With a targeted age group between 0 – 8-years, Jo said it was pivotal to form a link with the children and their families.
“I’m finding my feet and working with the families – it’s important building a rapport.
“I try to get across that the earlier that we provide the assistance the better the outcome - nobody wants to be told there is something wrong with their kid,” she said.
Liaising with schools is an important part of her day to day efforts and she believes climbing learning obstacles before reaching a certain age was better for the child’s long-term outcome.
“Getting past the hurdles before reaching school can make things easier.”
