Day for Daniel on October 31 brought awareness to child safety in the name of Queensland schoolboy Daniel Morcombe who was abducted and murdered in 2003.
Across Australia more than 1500 schools took part in Day for Daniel events to educate children about safety.
“We’ve been doing child protection classes raising awareness,” Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School assistant principal Stephen Manser said.
“We try and remind parents and children of the dangers – no matter how big a community is these things can still happen unfortunately,” he said.
Money raised from a gold coin donation on the day went to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation which has been established to promote child safety through the Keeping Kids Safe school curriculum.
A foundation spokesperson said awareness was pivotal to keeping children safe.
“Early intervention through education is the key and our goals include having the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum (developed by Education Queensland) included in every school in the country,” the spokesperson said.
