Mr Gillespie celebrated his 94th birthday at the Tenterfield Saddler last Thursday surrounded by family, friends and some curious tourists.
“It was a wonderful day – thanks to the town people who turned up and all the volunteers,” Aub said.
Since a move to work in the meatworks at the age of 20, Aub has called Tenterfield home.
Born in Maclean, he moved to Brushgrove on Woodford Island before making the switch to Tenterfield in 1940.
An apprentice butcher, Aub said he was drawn to town by the “booming” meatworks.
He recalls the World War 2 years when the town had a population of around 18,000 and says when the meatworks closed Tenterfield lost a small part of its identity.
“It was a big blow – the town was making big money at that time,” he said.
Despite having family scattered around the country, Aub said he’d never considered leaving.
“This is the greatest place on earth.”
