Tuesday marked White Ribbon Day across the country with communities acknowledging it in various forms.
The Tenterfield Community Hub spent the days leading up to November 25 encouraging men to take an ‘oath’ against violence.
Gail Galloway at the Hub said they’ve seen a good response from local men who have handed over an oath to “never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women”.
Despite the raised attention, NSW police say there continues to be an increase in cases. In 2013 police attended more than 135,000 domestic violence incidents across NSW — about 385 a day.
Police applied for 45,000 apprehended violence orders and laid about 25,000 charges.
NSW police data shows that every major crime type has been falling but reports of domestic violence continue to climb.
“This is Australia’s dark and insidious secret,” White Ribbon Campaign chief Libby Davies said.
Tenterfield police sergeant Michael Eaton said he spent the morning of White Ribbon Day responding to a report of domestic violence.
“People need to know it won’t be tolerated. Domestic violence covers many forms – physical, mental, financial and sexual.
“What we have to do is take the blame away from the victims so people aren’t scared to come forward.”
Sergeant Eaton said this time of year was particularly bad for cases of violence in general.
“During the summer period it does get worse – alcohol plays a big part,” he said.
