The Seven Network has commissioned the two part tele-drama about the life of entertainer Peter Allen.
The project, titled Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door, will be produced by Shine Australia, the company which produced Seven's miniseries hit INXS: Never Tear Us Apart.
Seven will be hopeful that the Peter Allen production will be as big a success as their INXS miniseries which was widely acclaimed and a ratings triumph.
The telemovie also fuelled an extraordinary surge in record sales for the group.
Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door will be directed by Shawn Seet from a script by Justin Monjo and Michael Miller.
Production is well under way after a crew visited Armidale earlier this year.
The only Australian to win an Oscar, a Grammy and a Golden Globe, Allen wrote some of our most iconic songs before dying in 1992 at 48-years-of-age.
Born in Tenterfield, his song ‘Tenterfield Saddler’ continues to be a classic song that thrust Tenterfield into the limelight after its release.
Tenterfield Shire Council tourism officer Caitlin Reid said they were hopeful filming would extend to include his town of birth.
She did however concede that they were yet to be approached by Shine Australia.
“It would be fantastic so we’ll have to wait and see,” Ms Reid said.
The crew has announced that some filming for the four-hour production will take place in Armidale, Sydney and in the U.S.
Characters depicting Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, Allen Brothers partner Chris Bell and partner Gregory Connell will be involved.
No air date has been announced for the tele-drama.
