Killarney’s ladies league tag side were schooled by Tenterfield’s premiership winning side as the Tigers ran out 72-12 victors.
It was the first game for the Killarney side that have pulled together some local girls in the hope of being able to compete in similar fashion to their male counterparts who have won back-to-back A-grade titles.
Tiger’s club president Brendan Minns said it was pleasing to watch the girls continue their hot form.
“For a whole lot of those Killarney girls it was the first game they’ve ever played – they played extremely well for what they’ve done so far,” Minns said.
“They showed signs of being a good side but it’s hard coming up against the premiers in your first game.”
With much of the preseason’s off-field talk centring on player incomings and outgoings, Minns said it was good to get back out on the paddock.
The Tigers faced a strong Warwick Cowboys reserve side that were undergoing their third preseason fixture to the Tigers one.
The Tenterfield side held their own throughout the encounter and led for parts of the match.
In the end Warwick’s fitness was a decisive factor as Tenterfield were dealt a 28-18 loss.
“We started really slow – the fact that a lot of the boys hadn’t met or had anything to do with each other made it difficult,” Minns said.
The Tigers led 18-16 late on in the game but Warwick crossed for two tries in the dying minutes to sew up the tie.
“I was very impressed with some of our new recruits – there were definitely positives to take out of the day.
“The main thing for me was to see how positions will work and try throwing a few boys into different positions,” Minns said.
“It’s all positive, no negativity.”
In 18 days’ time Tenterfield will play host to the other Border Rugby League sides for the annual preseason round robin.
Tenterfield, Stanthorpe, Wallangarra and Killarney will meet to get early bragging rights heading into the new season.
Head up to Rugby League Park on Saturday, March 21 for the day of action.
