The club enjoyed a two-week break but may be wishing they hadn’t after Warwick showed why they are strong title favourites in most grades.
Tenterfield’s junior colts enjoyed a run out in an unofficial tie, with Warwick not officially fielding a side in the junior division this season.
While not an official fixture, colts and men’s coach Stan Hickey, said the side can learn a lot playing against experienced opposition like Warwick.
“It’s good for our kids – they’ll just keep getting stronger and stronger,” Hickey said.
In the senior colts game Warwick enjoyed a large portion of the possession and ran out 7-2 winners.
Hickey’s side were up against last year’s title winners and were doing so with some fresh faces.
“We had some new guys that I hadn’t even seen play before the weekend.”
Wolves striker Sam McLellan notched five goals but Hickey said once they begin to gel he’ll have a good side at his disposal.
The girls flew the flag for Tenterfield beating Warwick 4-2.
Hickey said Warwick had strengthened since last year and it will make for an interesting season.
“They have a pretty good outfit – they’ll be in the mix at the end. I think this year we’ll have an interesting competition in the ladies,” he said.
The men’s game rounded out the day’s action and Warwick were dominant for much of it.
“We wanted to try a few new things but failed miserably,” Hickey admitted.
Wolves’ players Rob Davey and Josh Jordan shone for their side in a 10-2 win.
“We have a good squad but are playing like individuals and I think the guys realise that.”
Stan said the referees made a few howlers but wasn’t passing blame.
“They were so aggressive on the ball – we were just getting knocked off.”
The side could now be without key player Trent Van Itallie after he was forced from the field with an injury.
“It’s a big blow for us and him. He’s really looking to elevate his career this year,” Hickey said.
The Thunder travel to Stanthorpe this Saturday to play Stanthorpe City in three grades.
The ladies have been forced to reschedule and will play at C.F White Oval on Friday night.
