The Tigers went into the clash sitting pretty atop the Border Rugby League ladder with three wins from three.
Killarney captain/coach John Trindall, with aid from Dion Galloway, led the Cutters to their first victory of the season.
Tigers coach Brendan Minns said their complacency let them down.
“It was the first time we’ve actually been leading at half-time – we were up 18-16,” Minns said.
Tenterfield have pulled off some miraculous come from behind wins so far this season but Killarney played out of their skin to hold them out.
“The start of the second half they ran in two quick tries – we were forever behind the eight ball.”
“There was a bit of a lack of urgency to get on loose balls, the little things are letting us down but this may serve as a good wake up call,” he said.
The Cutters were back playing some of the stand out football that clinched them the premiership last season.
Solid work up the middle and pace down the wings allowed them to stretch the game and claim a 36-30 win on home soil.
“It was more so ourselves that really let them win. Not taking away from them but we had five of our starting line-up out and three guys playing their first games,” Minns said.
He conceded the side still had a long way to go and said they’d been somewhat lucky to date.
“If it wasn’t for a few miracles we could be looking down the barrel of four losses,” he said.
The ladies league tag side were a different story as they notched a record breaking score-line.
“They dead-set just ran rampant. I was in the change room and came out 10 minutes into the game and it was already 30 something nil,” Minns said.
The girls went on to beat Killarney 94-0 – by Minns account, the biggest score-line to be recorded in the BRL competitions history.
“They are really getting along as a group which is part of why they are doing well on the field.”
Rugby League Park will host a huge day of football this Saturday with the Border Bears kicking things off.
The Bears will play Warwick Collegians from under 8’s to 16’s followed by the Tigers.
In the past week the BRL has opted to include a new Reserve Grade division in the competition with Stanthorpe, Tenterfield and Wallangarra all set to field sides.
This weekend will see the Tigers and Rams play Reserve Grade before ladies league tag and leading into the A-grade game at 3pm.
“We’ve got to shape up against Wallangarra – they are definitely no easy beats and are here to play footy, good footy too,” Minns said.
The Tigers will train Friday night from 7pm ahead of their home fixtures the following day.
