Most of the build-up was focused on the day’s main event between the Burleigh Bears and Sunshine Coast Falcons but Tenterfield were eager to show their own class.
Club president and A-grade captain/coach Brendan Minns said he was left scratching his head after his side were trounced 58-24.
“We had a couple of late exclusions and a few late turn ups.
“Mistakes led to our demise – just didn’t complete the simple things,” he said.
There was little flow to the game and Minns said they struggled to muster any momentum.
“We’d do something extremely well and looked good in patches and then yeah – simple discipline was nowhere.
“Little bit of a lack of commitment and enthusiasm,” he said.
Minns said the Reserve Grade had the same issues as they lost their clash.
The girls provided the day’s only positive for Tenterfield as they were dominant in a 20-0 win over Stanthorpe.
The A-grade has only one remaining fixture to mend any issues before finals when they host Killarney this weekend.
“We’ve got a lot we have to fix… straight away.
“We’ll have to rectify these problems pretty quickly otherwise we’ll being watching the grand final from the stands instead of being a part of it,” he said.
In the midst of all the local games the Bears and Falcons faced off in their Intrust Super Cup clash as part of Queensland Rugby League’s Country Week.
The Burleigh side came-from-behind to snatch a dramatic 18-16 win.
With just three minutes left on the clock and trailing by four points, some magic from man of the match Ryley Jacks led to the match-winning try.
Sunshine Coast was perhaps unfortunate to lose the game having led 10-0 at half-time with the majority of possession and penalties going in their favour.
With NRL rostered players in both sides the Stanthorpe community got right behind the country fixture.
Minns said it was a “great game” and that it was brilliant for the area to snare such a big encounter.
