Fifteen-year-old, Year 10 Woodenbong Central School student Remy Leonard is rising through the ranks of Australian archery.
What’s more remarkable about his ascension is he’s only taken up the sport in the last two-years.
Lismore Great Eastland Archers and Northern Rivers Field Archers at Leeville have become regular haunts for Remy.
He utilises the clubs for target shooting and 3D archery but spends the majority of weekends competing in Brisbane.
Remy’s love of archery was inherited from his father Chris, and fully supported by his mother Sue.
He received his first bow for Christmas two-years-ago and his parents have had a hard time prying it from him.
Younger sister, Tabitha, also an archery ‘cub shooter’, has taken up the sport too and recently won the Queensland State Title for her division.
Remy has picked up award after award in his short time in the sport.
He won the 3D National Champion title in 2013 and 2014 and 3D Indoor National Champion where he broke a National Record.
Remy is the Full State Champion for Queensland and at the 2015 Youth National’s held in Sydney he became the Silver Medalist for Clout (20years and under).
He’s the Short Range Champion for Queensland, the State Champion for Clout Queensland and his most recent achievement was winning the Queensland State Title in his division for 3D shoot earlier this month.
All his achievements haven’t gone unnoticed with national selectors picking Remy to represent Australia as ‘Indoor Team Shooter’ for the 2016 World Archery Championships to be held in Turkey next March.
“I aspire to be a world class archer therefore this is a major stepping stone for me and I am very excited about this opportunity,” Remy said.
With funding tight and archers required to pay the majority of their own expenses a fund has been set up to support Remy.
Should you want to support him you can donate by way of bank deposit into the Woodenbong Central School’s Administration Account: BSB 032.001 Account: 156839 for Remy Leonard.
