As the name suggests, it is based upon the sport of athletics (track and field) and the events are specially modified to suit the ages and abilities of children.
A wide range of running, jumping, throwing and walking events are conducted for kids aged 5 to 16-years-old.
Michelle McBurney from Border Blue’s said it’s a great way for youngsters to learn some new skills while staying fit and active.
“We put a focus on learning with games as well as competing.
“Original athletics training was used for warfare but we don’t use the gory implements but the skills we teach are a good foundation for a few other sports.
“We do field events, shot put, javelin, discus, long jump, triple jump, sprinting, middle distance running and race walking,” Ms McBurney said.
The emphasis is placed on participation and personal improvement.
It is little surprise then, that the motto of Little Athletics is "family, fun and fitness".
Border Blue’s recognises that children vary widely in shape, size and athletic ability, and is one of few sports that successfully caters for them all.
Each year across NSW, approximately 40,000 boys and girls enjoy the activities that Little Athletics has to offer.
Participants travel from Stanthorpe to attend the Tenterfield Little Athletics and Ms McBurney said they’re hopeful of surpassing 30 members this year.
“You must be 5-years-old as of September 30 this year and up to 16-years-of-age.
“We run each Tuesday through to Easter when we break as kids go into school athletics.
“There are also cross-country options for them and extra coaching available,” Michelle said.
Parents are encouraged to help out on training nights.
Whether it is timing, measuring or cooking the barbecue Michelle said it’s important they retain parental support and assistance.
The Border Blue’s meet each Tuesday for training and a sausage sizzle between 5-7pm with a cost of $85 per participant.
Free try out days will be held on October 6 and 13 at Federation Park from 5pm.
