NSW Governor David Hurley hosted the annual soiree at Government House in order to show gratitude to representatives from state emergency services.
Tenterfield’s John Gray was cherry-picked by New England North West Zone Commander Superintendent Stephen Hirst.
“I have 21 fire stations under me and I was asked to provide an officer, whether myself, or someone else.
“I didn’t have a hesitation to call John – he was my first point of call,” he said.
Supt Hirst oversees 355 individuals but said John had ‘good standing in the community and within fire and rescue’.
“More importantly he’s a lovely, lovely guy – I couldn’t think of anyone better.”
Army, Airforce, Navy, RFS, Ambulance Services and Fire and Rescue were all represented at the meet and greet.
“I was quite stoked,” John said.
He and wife Gail mingled with the hundreds in attendance for the evening.
“He (Governor Hurley) opened up the house and it just blows your mind.
“That’s my mix with high society – it was a privilege to go and experience it.”
The night concluded like any get together - with a fireworks display over the Sydney Opera House organised for the guests.
Despite the personal invitation John said he was disappointed not to get an opportunity to meet Governor Hurley.
