Since taking control of the centre in early August council has brought in 15 volunteers and two casual staff members.
“August saw 1,376 visitors coming through the centre with the majority of visitors looking for general information on things to see and do in the area,” a council media release said.
“Visitors are particularly interested in our national parks, scenic drives and museums, as well as the location of caravan parks and conditions of roads – both locally and regionally.”
Brisbane and Lismore continue to be the top destinations visitors are coming from.
“Businesses from all over the shire are encouraged to provide brochures, flyers and business cards to the information centre to assist with the promotion of their business to visitors.
“Council is also investigating the possibility of restocking the Visitors Information Centre with souvenirs in the coming months, with a key focus on locally made products.”
A volunteer familiarisation program is set to be rolled by council this month.
Each month volunteers and staff will be asked to visit attractions, accommodation and tourism business operators in town and throughout the region.
“Volunteers are still needed and anyone interested in volunteering at the centre is encouraged to apply.”
After years of turbulence, which only escalated over the past 12-months, mayor Peter Petty said he was excited by the new chapter.
“It is great to see so many positive comments coming from visitors to the centre,” he said.
“There are plenty of exciting ideas for the centre which we (council) are looking to implement in the coming months.
“We are pleased to see that tourism in the shire is moving forward,” he said.
