SOME say that a round of golf spoils a good walk; others like Noela Edmonds, Thelma Whitley and Pat Whalan play the game, well in to their eighties, chasing that perfect shot, that under par round and a few laughs along the way because they love the game.

Every Wednesday at the Tenterfield Golf Club the ‘golden girls’ as they are affectionately known by their fellow golfers, tee off in pursuit of that perfect round of golf.
The girls enjoy each other’s company on and off the course and would like to encourage more female participation in the game, something Thelma is passionate about.
“I can’t see why girls and ladies of all ages wouldn’t want to play golf, it is so much fun and it’s always a good challenge,” she said.
“I always strive to play well every time I go out on the course, I have my good and bad days, but I enjoy a game no matter how I am playing.”
Pat says that being generally good at sport is not a pre requisite to being good at golf.
“I have played many sports throughout my life, but I only took up golf when I was in my sixties and the fact that I am still playing now should be an encouragement to anyone that this is a great game to play,” she said.
“Of course the social element of it is a big part for all of us, we have been playing together for a very long time and we all look forward to our weekly game.”
In fact, Noela has been playing golf since 1958 and jokes that some days it feels like she needs all those years of experience to play a good round.
“I once shot an 82 and the par was 75 and I walked off feeling ten feet tall and bullet proof that day,” she said.
“Golf is a wonderful game I have played it all my life and I too look forward to our weekly games.
“We don’t play for money like the men do with their five bucks a hole stuff, we play for fun, the enjoyment of each other’s company and the sense of satisfaction when we do have a good round.”
