Research from peak prevention organisation Our Watch found more than a quarter of young people hold attitudes that put them at risk of perpetrating or tolerating violence against women.
Gender equality – and the modelling of good behaviour by parents, teachers and other key influencers – is believed to hold the key to helping change these attitudes.
Tenterfield High School showed their support for the day with principal Peter Willis encouraging men to stand against violence against women.
“All men should support this outstanding campaign to stop this awful behaviour,” he said.
His comments were echoed by Karen Mooney from Tenterfield Social Development Committee.
“It is important men are more aware – especially a younger generation.”
White Ribbon Australia said their campaign is to challenge the attitudes and behaviours of a minority.
“Our vision at White Ribbon Australia is that all women live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence.
“The victims of violence are not merely statistics – they are our wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends.”
In Tenterfield today a congregation is being held at the Post Office at 12.30pm with everyone being encouraged to wear white to show their support.
