Sides from across the region descended on Tenterfield as Rugby League Park hosted a round robin, under 18’s Toowoomba Rugby League fixture and a clash between the Tigers and Inglewood in A-grade.
The Border Bushrangers took on Pittsworth in the TRL clash and the ‘home’ side were up against it from the going.
Pittsworth stretched to a 22-6 lead before the game was abandoned after a nasty injury to Tenterfield representative Levi McGrady.
McGrady was taken away in an ambulance with a suspected ankle injury.
The Tigers league tag ladies were anticipating a day full of fixtures – it wasn’t to be. Late withdrawals from Pittsworth and Warwick meant only two games were contested between Tenterfield and Stanthorpe/Texas as well as Goondiwindi and Wallangarra.
The local girls run rampant to claim a 34-0 win while Goondiwindi beat the Rams.
In the men’s clash Tenterfield took on the Inglewood Roosters.
Coach, Chris Battersby, said his side played “pretty well” but gave away too many penalties. Despite that, the Tigers won 50-28. Battersby said he was impressed with his attack but wasn’t pleased they let in 28 points.
“We had a fair few penalties given against us. They managed to score a few points off penalties and mistakes.
“We’ve got plenty in attack. I think Jarrod McIntosh scored four tries and Marc McGrady got two or three,” he said. Chris said he thinks that Inglewood will provide their biggest hurdle to claiming the competition title this season.
“They’ll be the team to beat. We’ve obviously got a good side but we need to do the right things,” he said. Tenterfield head to Texas for a game under lights on Friday night and Chris believes the combined Stanthorpe/Texas outfit will put up a good fight.
“They’ll be hard to beat out there for sure.”
