It’s the first time it’s happened in Tenterfield and possibly throughout the entire district, but local lady bowlers are celebrating a clean sweep of all the district competitions, bringing home the trophies for fours, triples, pairs and singles in the latest season.

The competitions were spread across the 2015 playing year, at the 10 clubs in the Southern Downs District Ladies Bowling Association (SDDLBA). Cheryl Vidulich, Daphne Kirkman, Shirley Tribe and Marie Parker (skip) won the fours in Warwick; Margaret Green, Helen Shepherd and Katie Graham (skip) won the triples at home in Tenterfield; Penny Stanbridge and Rita Kling won the pairs in Stanthorpe; and Mrs Stanbridge went on to win the singles at The Summit.
“Tenterfield usually does well, maybe winning one or two of the championships, but this is the first time there’s been a clean sweep,” club president Elaine Symko said.
She puts the club’s achievement down to the players being very competitive and dedicated to the game, and working well together as a team.
Not content to rest on its laurels, the club is out to its crown and has already secured the district fours competition, again in Warwick, with the same team. The same pairs team is contesting its championship in Stanthorpe this month, while the singles championship will be held at Warwick East in June and the triples in Tenterfield in July.
All players will be returning to re-contest, as long as work commitments allow. Mrs Symko said there are currently 33 members in the ladies bowling club, and they’re very supportive of newer players coming into the game.
While there’s no formal training, the players hone their skills at the Wednesday and Sunday games.
Will the 2015 champions be able to maintain the momentum and do it all over again this year?
“They’re working very hard to make that happen,” Mrs Symko said.
“We’re extremely proud of them.”
