Although the actual score line is under contention (94-nil on the books, 98-nil announced over the PA system and 100-nil according to the Tigers’ bench), club president Brendan Minns said the Tigers crossed the try line 17 times, complemented by 16 conversions. The coach and players, however, are even more proud of the fact they didn’t allow the opposition to cross the line.
Minns said play was pretty even for the first 15 minutes, before the Tigers’ fitness and determination turned the tide in their favour and the points starting piling on. The half-time score was 40-nil, with another 60 (odd) points added before the final whistle.
“The other team had around 20 players so it wasn’t that they were down on numbers,” Minns said.
While there’s not a lot of love lost between the two sides, the Tigers’ superiority was clear.
“We smashed them,” Minns said.
“Chris has focussed a lot on our defence in training, and this is quite an improvement. We had to stop the flow of points against us. Now we’ve set ourselves a target to hold our opponents to nil, or as low as possible.”
The Tigers escaped the encounter with no significant injuries, and the team enjoyed playing under lights. Minns said it was a beautiful night and the locals turned out to support the home team. He said it was great to be back playing in Texas after several years’ absence, with the win making it even sweeter.
The leaguetag team also enjoyed a convincing win, coming away with a 40-nil victory. This score line combined with the previous week’s means the girls have racked up 74 points in the two games.
“They scored in the first couple of minutes, and just went on from there,” Minns said.
“They were unreal.”
The Tigers have a bye this week and then they take on Killarney at home at Rugby League Park.
