Tenterfield Pony Club and local Show Society joined together recently to hold the two-day event, a first for the district but with the possibility of becoming an annual event on the horse-riding calendar.
Close to 200 kids took part on April 16 and 17, competing in campdrafting, sporting, steer riding and barrel racing.
“Local children and children from Casino, Kyogle, Glen Innes, Inverell, Barraba, Tamworth and as far west as St George, from ages under 8 to 21 years, competed,” Wendy Kings from Tenterfield Pony Club said.
“The campdraft, in particular, was very well supported with over 200 runs being recorded each day. Local cattle donors were extremely generous in loaning cattle for this event,” she said.
Tenterfield children featured over the weekend with a number of podium places in the campdraft.
Georgia O’Neill finished 2nd in the under 15-17 years, Emily Butler picked up a 2nd place, Adam Clothier finished equal 3rd/4th in the under 17-21 years, Ellie Thomas was equal 4th in the under 8-11 years and Jackson King finished 1st, 2nd and equal 3rd in the under 17-21 years.
Six sporting events were also run each day. They included bending, flag, barrel, bonfield bounce, scudda ho and stock rider.
Local winners include Holly Thomas and Phillippa Lyons in the under 8 years; Bridie Makajev, Jackson O’Neill, Emily Ward and Chloe Thomas in under 8-11 years; Jacob Thomas in under 11-13 years; Chloe Butler and Emily Rhodes in under 13-15 years; Grace Clothier, Emily Butler, Georgia O’Neill and Zac Lieberman in under 15-17 years and Jackson Kings in under 17-21 years.
“Our small rodeo was well supported on Saturday night with three ages in the steer riding competition,” Wendy said.
The junior steer ride in 8-11 years was won by Mitchell Southern of St George, Brock Adams from Inverell won the 11-14 years and Brad Dunn from Glen Elgin won the juvenile steer ride in the 14-18 years.
The under 11 years barrel race was won by Mackenzie Berkley of Inverell, Blake Weir of Warwick in the 11-14 years and Tenterfield’s Emily Rhodes won the 14-18 years.
“Approximately $7000 in prize money and donations was given out on the weekend and much of this was donated by the fantastic business houses and people of Tenterfield.
“We are extremely grateful to them for their assistance which enabled the event to be conducted,” Wendy said.
