These include our own state member of parliament Thomas George, whose parents migrated to Australia.
He said he felt that a refugee’s struggle with literacy was an even greater incentive for the community to take them in.
“As the son of Christian Lebanese migrants, I know how hard it can be to settle in a new land,” Mr Thomas told the Star.
“Throughout the Lismore electorate we have a number of refugees and programs in place which I have been very supportive of, for example the latest one being at Mingoola.
“It is often through no fault of their own some refugees are unskilled or illiterate, and this is even more reason why we should reach out with support.”
