Weekend downpours forced the cancellation of most other sporting fixtures and events on Saturday and Sunday, yet young Tigers players were smiling ear to ear as they enjoyed some footy in the mud.
Millwood, a combined Millmerran, Inglewood and Texas team, put in the miles to face Tenterfield in six grades.
Tenterfield JRL president Peter Holley said playing in the wet was just part of the fun of footy.
“The field was in no way dangerous,” he said. “It’s [rain] just part of it.”
Holley said some players and parents travelled two hours to the games and the club couldn’t rightly call them off for a little shower.
The Tigers, still brandishing their old Bears jerseys as they wait for new attire, put in strong performances across each grade.
Barring a narrow loss for the under 10s, the other five local sides won in convincing fashion.
Holley said the under 11s maintained their 2016 unbeaten streak while the league tag girls notched yet another victory in a 16-6 win.
The 11s put 44 points past Millwood as Goondiwindi beat Collegians 22-16 in the other under 11s tie.
In the under 12s Tenterfield had a slender 8 point win while Stanthorpe lost to Wattles and Goondiwindi beat Collegians 22-10.
The under 14s had a bye and will travel to Platz Oval to face Collegians on Saturday, June 11.
“They’re all travelling pretty well this year,” Holley said.
Strong club form has seen a number of juniors picked for representative sides.
“We have 24 out of 120 representative players,” he said.
This coming weekend the under 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s, 12s and under 16s league tag girls all have a bye.
