Tenterfield welcomed Stanthorpe United to Federation Park in cold, blustery conditions.
Junior Colts got the day’s games underway and came up against a more experienced United bunch.
“They’re improving every week,” club coach Glenn Caisley said.
“I think we need to make special mention of Jacob Chawner in goals. He really impressed me and is improving heaps,” Caisley said.
United proved too good and ran away with the game, as was the case in the senior colts fixture.
Tenterfield played a player short and it did little to help them against a dominant United side.
“I believe Tenterfield have some potential there – I saw some talent, just not enough of it,” Stanthorpe United coach Steve McEvoy said.
“If the club can continue to build on what they have, in a few years they could push for finals football in the seniors but there is work to do for now,” he said.
The girls tie proved to be the game of the day as both teams wrestled for supremacy.
“It was end to end stuff – a bit of an arm wrestle,” Caisley said.
Tenterfield took a 1-nil lead into the half-time break but a late own goal resulted in a 1-1 draw.
Player, Amy Condrick, said it was a really “tough game”.
Stanthorpe United’s less than convincing finishing kept Tenterfield in the men’s tie for much of the game.
Goalkeeper Andrew Stuart frustrated the United strikers, pulling out some impressive one on one saves.
Tenterfield kept possession well when they had the ball but United proved too strong with a 4-0 win.
“Tenterfield scrambled well in the second half to keep the score down and create a couple of scoring opportunities themselves,” United coach McEvoy said.
“At halftime you would think that United could run away with it, but some outstanding goalkeeping and desperate defence kept us at 4-0.”
Caisley said his side were pleased with the effort and result and now turn focus to an even firmer test against Ballandean this weekend.
Games get underway from 11.30am at Federation Park.
