At present our local government elections are arranged so that two shire councillors are elected to represent each of the five wards, as well as directing and controlling the general policies and affairs of the council.

It has been proposed to abolish this system, so that all electors vote for all 10 councillors that represent the Tenterfield Shire Council area.
In a few days time we shall all have to vote on whether to maintain the current wards system or whether all residents should vote for 10 councillor nominees, who would then have no special responsibility for any particular area of the shire.
This is an important issue which does not seem to have promoted much public debate, although information has been provided, for instance by our council, outlining some of the advantages and disadvantages of each system.
Hopefully any persons holding strong views in support of, or against, either of the systems will air them publicly so that voters are in a better position to make a well-informed decision when voting in the forthcoming referendum.
